Updating or Re-installing WordSmith
Update
Choose File | Web version check in WordSmith.
Or visit http://www.lexically.net/downloads/version4/wordsmith_versions.htm where there's a detailed list of the WordSmith component files; you can easily download the whole lot from there.
Fresh Install (Standalone PC)
Naturally a defective download would cause trouble... or possibly changes to your Windows installation or anti-virus software might affect one or more of the component files.
How to re-install?
a) rename c:\wsmith4 for example as c:\wsmith4OLD
b) download the "one big .exe file" from http://www.lexically.net/downloads/version4/wordsmith_versions.htm eg. into c:\temp
c) run it and let it create c:\wsmith4 and copy all the files into that folder
d) run c:\wsmith4\wordsmith.exe
e) confirm agreement to OUP terms
f) paste in the username and code into the registration windowUnder c:\wsmith4OLD there may be a lot of useful saved data in sub-folders (c:\wsmith4OLD\wordlist, c:\wsmith4OLD\concord etc.) which can simply be copied or moved to the newly re-created c:\wsmith4. It's best never to add any saved results of your own to c:\wsmith4 itself precisely so as to be able to re-install easily if necessary: always use sub-folders of \wsmith4 or some other location.
Files worth copying back later from c:\wsmith4OLD might include:
wordsmith.ini (default settings)
language_choices.ini (if you have defined additional languages)
history_list.txt (list of recently saved files)
Concord_recent_chosen_text_files.dat (list of favourite texts)
recent_search_words.txt (history list of search-terms)After you have finished doing this you have your new version at c:\wsmith4 and your old one still there at c:\wsmith4OLD. So you don't need to worry about losing anything in the older version.
Fresh Install (Network version)
If N: is your network drive. (eg. N:\wsmith4),
a) rename N:\wsmith4 for example as N:\wsmith4OLD
b) download the "one big .exe file" from http://www.lexically.net/downloads/version4/wordsmith_versions.htm eg. into c:\temp
c) run it but make sure it extracts into drive N:\wsmith4
d) copy N:\wsmith4OLD\wordsmith.ini (default settings) into N:\wsmith4.
e) run N:\wsmith4\wordsmith.exe
f) confirm agreement to OUP terms
g) paste in the username and code into the registration windowIf you have lost N:\wsmith4OLD\wordsmith.ini, edit N:\wsmith4\wordsmith.ini in the [Network] section as explained in the Help file wordsmith.chm, or online here; look at "network" in the index.
