BNC XML Edition
The search-word would be
<w c5="AJ?" * *>* analysis
(Adjectives in the BNC XML Edition are marked <w c5=" plus AJ0,AJC or AJ0, and " then we need two asterisks for the hw and pos attributes, > and an asterisk to tell WordSmith to carry right on to the end of the word after the tag, then the word analysis)
As it is so difficult to read the whole line because of the excessively long BNC XML mark-up, it is best to hide the undefined mark-up. One way is via View | Tag Hiding | Undefined tags,
and another is simply to click the relevant button in the main toolbar. Now it is much easier to read.

Earlier BNC editions
Suppose you want to find adjectives in L1 position before a word like ANALYSIS.
The search-word would be
<w AJ?>* analysis
(The tag for an adjective in these editions is <w plus AJ0,AJC or AJ0, then we need the closing > and an asterisk to tell WordSmith to carry right on to the end of the word after the tag, then we specify the word analysis.)
If we hide the tags themselves and reduce colour to only the nouns and adjectives, it will look like this:
