In this paper I shall explore the new insights into language and, especially, insights into differences and distinctions between spoken and written language generated by the latest research into language corpora. Data from a range of projects such as the British National Corpus and Nottingham University's CANCODE project will be explored to argue for the kinds of accents and approaches need if work in language awareness is to embrace these new developments.
