Past imperfect, present simple, future progressive?:

what PGCE trainees know and are expected to know about grammar

Wasyl Cajkler and Jane Hislam

University of Leicester, UK

This presentation explores the current level of grammatical knowledge among Primary PGCE trainees (1997-2000) at the University of Leicester, measured against the requirements of the National Curriculum, the National Literacy Strategy and the standards expected of Primary teacher trainees. Discussion follows about the tensions between levels of grammatical awareness and expectations, with some exploration of approaches to bridging the gap.
